Stone Staircase

Marble and granite are two of the most popular materials when it comes to choosing a worktop for your kitchen or bathroom. Both are incredibly beautiful, hard-wearing, and are the very epitome of class and elegance, but what is the difference between marble and granite?

We hope to answer that question definitively for you here.

Other differences between marble and granite

  • Price – Marble is much more expensive than granite. The difference in price is a reflection of how difficult it is to extract from the source, installation costs, and maintenance costs.
  • Durability – Comparatively, marble is a much softer stone than granite, so granite is the more durable of the two.
  • Maintenance – Once a granite work surface has been sealed it is highly resistant to staining and only needs a damp cloth to keep it clean. Because marble is the softer rock of the two, it can react when exposed to acidic materials, so the maintenance of marble is slightly more intensive.
  • Appearance – Marble is the more visually appealing of the two materials. With its veins and swirls, marble has long been associated with opulence, extravagance, and luxury. If you’re wanting to make a statement then marble is the way to go.
  • Texture – Marble is silky smooth with a high shine gloss, which accentuates its stunning array of colours and patterns. Granite, on the other hand, has a grainy texture with a matt finish (although, a shiny finish can be applied).

What is the main difference between marble and granite?

Although marble and granite share many qualities, the big advantage that granite has over marble is that it is many times stronger and harder. Don’t get us wrong, marble is no slouch when it comes to toughness, but this is one battle that granite wins hands down.

Which is better; marble or granite?

This really boils down to personal choice and nothing more. Both materials are incredibly desirable and will heighten the appearance of any room you choose to install them in. Marble is the more visually striking of the two, but costs far more. Granite is far more robust and easier to maintain but lacks the wow factor of marble.

Granite and marble make incredibly beautiful worktops, wall and floor coverings, splashbacks and more, so now you know the difference between marble and granite check out our marble and granite ranges below and decide which is the one for you.
